Abstract: This report is intended to be a guide to indirect monitoring methods with special attention to actinides and 90Sr intakes in an emergency scenario, focus on nuclear o radiological accident/incident scenario including malevolent one. Such situations may involve high doses and many affected people, needing a rapid response and demanding to quickly determine the number of exposed individuals and assess contamination levels.
In routine operations, bioassay techniques for activity quantification of these radionuclides require the application of radiochemical separation protocols and long counting times to reach very low minimum detectable activity values. In contrast to routine methods, screening and rapid methods focus on speed (rapid turnaround times, ease of use, and sufficient sensitivity for emergency decision-making) and practicality (minimal preparation to facilitate rapid and shorter analysis to meet the urgent needs of an emergency scenario). Both approaches are essential for comprehensive radiological protection and response.
This document outlines the minimum types and requirements for sampling and measurement methods, as well as the best screening or triage methods. It also offers different proposals for rapid quantification methods and includes observations and considerations related to the intakes of the above-mentioned radionuclides. This technical report can be considered as a practical and useful tool in radiological emergency scenarios for the main decision processes, required for intervention.
