Support for Ukraine

The invasion of the Russian Federation against Ukraine has caused a serious threat to nuclear and radiological safety. In this situation, EURADOS called for the collection of radiation protection equipment that institutes may have but no longer use, to be donated to Ukrainian institutes and hospitals. A wish list of urgent needs was collected from Ukrainian partners and confronted with an inventory collected from several European institutions.

We are pleased to inform that the dosimetric equipment collected by the European Dosimetric Network EURADOS to support Ukrainian colleagues fell into the hands of the final recipients. Among the recipients of the EURADOS assistance is the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, whose Chornobyl laboratory in the exclusion zone was destroyed by occupying forces in March 2022. The portable dosimeter-radiometer was handed over to the Head of the Department of Nuclear and Radiation Safety Viktor Krasnov and senior researcher Olena Parenyuk.  A radiometer capable of measuring gamma, beta and alpha radiation in the high dose rate fields was transferred to the Ukrainian Research Institute of Agricultural Radiology of Ukraine headed by the Professor Valeriy Kashparov. A set of electronic personal dosimeters, an alpha and beta particle flux density meter, a pocket dosimeter-radiometer will be useful to the National Research Center for Radiation Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine headed by Academician Dimytriy Bazyka.

We would like to express our gratitude for donor institutions: University Hospitals of Geneva, Azienda Sanitaria dell'Alto Adige and Paul Scherrer Institute; charity foundations Bee Ukrainian and Hope Worldwide,  Dr. Vadim Chumak from the SPE DOSIMETRICA, who organized the action in Ukraine, and all involved EURADOS members. The action was coordinated by Prof. Pawel Olko, vice-chair of EURADOS.  We will continue our solidarity action with our Ukrainian colleagues.
